January 8 – 12, 2018 was “Be the Change” WeekAt Port Angles High School, Pam Helpenstell’s Open Leadership Class paid homage to the late Martin Luther King Jr. by focusing on a particular character trait each day during the week, leading up to the MLK holiday on Monday, January 15. Here are the traits:
  • Monday - Kindness
  • Tuesday – Selflessness
  • Wednesday – Respect
  • Thursday – Positivity
  • Friday – Reflection
Each day, students selected a quote they read aloud in class by Dr. King relating to each of the character traits on the poster. They ended the week with reflection on Friday.

Marcos Lopez, senior, chose this quote for the trait of Positivity:
“Let no man pull you low enough to hate him.” Martin Luther King
Marcos says that each of us should strive to be the bigger person in each situation.

Cheyenne Wheeler, senior, found this quote that she felt depicts the trait of Kindness:
“Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend.” --MLK

Kinzie Phillips, senior, selected this quote about the trait of Positivity:
“If you want to move people, it has to be toward a vision that’s positive for them, that taps important values, that gets them something they desire and it has to be presented in a compelling way so that they feel inspired to follow.”--MLK

Lorenzo De La Torre and Joslyn Millsap, both seniors, focused on the Positivity of MLK as well. Joslyn’s selected quote was:
“The time is always right to do what is right.”--MLK
