PAHS Students in STEM Bridge Competition/2019 Popsicle Bridge Engineering ScholarshipsOn Sunday, March 17, a group of Port Angeles High School students, along with science teacher Derek Johnson, attended the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Popsicle Stick Bridge Contest at the Museum of Flight in Seattle. The bridge contest was originally scheduled for February 9 but was rescheduled due to snowstorms.

The competition is organized and run by the American Society of Civil Engineers – Younger Member Forum in the effort to encourage high school students to take an interest in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

Port Angeles High School took home the top four spots.

First Overall—Skyler Sullivan (395 lb.)

Second Overall—Daniel Weaver, Linus Waddell, and Hollund Bailey, all seniors (377 lb.)

First Strongest Bridge—Emma Weller and Kynzie Deleon, both juniors (229 lb.)

Second Strongest bridge—Mauritz Ahlburg, senior; Christine Beirne, senior; and Leo Ahlburg, sophomore (202 lb.)

“Our engineers announced four scholarship winners on Wednesday, March 20,” said Johnson.  Scholarship recipients are Skyler Sullivan ($500), Linus Waddell ($300), Hollund Bailey ($300), Daniel Weaver ($300), Kynzie Deleon ($200), and Emma Weller ($200).  Scholarships are funded by Gene Unger Engineering LLC and JLS Group, Inc. and Northwestern Territories, Inc.
