City Council Recognizes Ron JonesPort Angeles, Wash. – Port Angeles City Council members – Mayor Pat Downie, Deputy Mayor Cherie Kidd, Sisi Bruch, Brad Collins, Dan Gase, Michael Meredith and Lee Whethan - honored Port Angeles High School orchestra teacher Ron Jones in a ceremony at its Tuesday, June 6 council meeting at City Hall.  Jones was recognized, along with his wife Debbie Jones, for his 42 years of teaching service, all of which was completed in the Port Angeles School District.

As a special surprise, students of Jones assembled at the meeting to play “Hallelujah” and “Blue Grass.” Former students who played in the ensemble, with their Carnegie Hall trip year listed, are:

Brenda Francis planned to represent the 1993 Carnegie Hall group, but was unable to attend the meeting.

The Proclamation in Recognition of the Public Service of Ron Jones reads as follows:

WHEREAS, Ronald Jones has been the Director of the Port Angeles High School (PAHS) orchestra since 1975, and after many years of dedicated teaching, has decided to heed life’s cue, retiring after 42 years as the PAHS orchestra director.

WHEREAS, over his career, Ron has reprised his role as a successful instructor by leading the PAHS orchestra to 9 top-three trophies at the state music championships since 1998, more than thirty at the Northwest Orchestra Festivals since 1989, and has earned 9 trophies at the 
Washington Chapter of the American String Teachers Association/Western Washington University Orchestra Festival since it began in 2015, these are only a partial medley of the awards his students have earned under his leadership.

WHEREAS, his upbeat teaching style has resonated with students of all ages, from 4th through 12th grade, his orchestras often place at or near the top of both the Northwest Orchestra Festival and the State Ensemble Contest, and students under his maestro’s baton have performed at Carnegie Hall every four years since 1989, a total of eight times.

WHEREAS, in addition to his extended gig at PAHS and his role as a music instructor, he has received numerous local, state, and national awards for his work as a community leader, including the Port Angeles Education Foundation Distinguished Service Award, the Red Cross "Real Hero" Award, and the Clallam County Community Service Award.

WHEREAS, Ron has been recognized with the rare and career-capping honor of being named to the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Hall of Fame, in its 2017 class.

WHEREAS
, over the last four decades at Port Angeles High School and throughout the school district, Ron has not worked solo, but has been accompanied by his wife Debbie Jones. This duet has, over the course of their work, provided countless hours of leadership and support to the community’s music program.  Their devotion to the community is worthy of our most sincere “Bravo”.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Patrick Downie, Mayor, WITHOUT MISSING A BEAT, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF PORT ANGELES,
do hereby RECOGNIZE the public service of Ron Jones and thank him for many years of devoted service to our community, and we on the council, in unison, wish him all the best in his future performances.  While this may be his grand finale in one endeavor, we look forward to his encores yet to come!
